AI In Science
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how research is conducted, from data analysis and modelling to discovery processes across scientific disciplines. It offers significant opportunities to accelerate scientific progress, while also raising important questions around reliability, transparency, skills, and the responsible use of technology.
In the European Research Area (ERA), AI in science focuses on enabling researchers to make effective and responsible use of AI, supported by access to high-quality data, appropriate infrastructures, and relevant skills. Ensuring trust, research integrity and scientific quality is central to this effort.
In the ERA Policy Agenda (2025–2027), AI in science is introduced as a dedicated action, aiming to strengthen a coordinated European approach. This includes providing strategic orientation, supporting cooperation across countries and disciplines, and promoting the responsible use of AI in research. This builds on earlier work under the ERA Policy Agenda 2022–2024, including expert recommendations, practical guidelines and mutual learning activities.
