In an era where knowledge, innovation, and societal impact are central to Europe’s future, how we assess research and researchers has become a pivotal issue. Traditional evaluation systems, grounded primarily in narrow quantitative metrics, no longer suffice to capture the breadth and diversity of scholarly contributions. Recognizing this challenge, the European Union, under Denmark’s Presidency of the Council, is convening a high‑level conference on 3‑4 December 2025 in Copenhagen to help chart a new path forward for research assessment across Europe.
The conference will address the urgent need to redesign evaluation systems so that they align with broader goals: fostering open science, enhancing societal relevance, encouraging collaboration and interdisciplinarity, valuing diverse research outputs (beyond journal articles), and promoting responsible, inclusive research cultures.
Bringing together people from universities, funding agencies, policy bodies, scholarly societies, and the research community, the conference seeks to build shared understanding, align incentives, and develop actionable pathways for more responsible, equitable, and impactful research assessment across Europe.
The conference is designed as a hybrid format: primarily held in-person, with live streaming of all Day 1 sessions and plenary sessions on Day 2 to accommodate remote participation. You can declare your interest first, then register here: https://www.cerra.aau.dk/
Registration is free of charge but required.
See you in Copenhagen!
