07 Knowledge valorisation

How does research lead to real-world impact? What EU-level support exists to help researchers turn knowledge into action?

Across Europe, researchers and research organisations are finding new ways to turn scientific knowledge, ideas and results into societal, economic and environmental benefits. This process of knowledge valorisation can take many forms, from collaboration with industry and public actors to intellectual property management, start-ups and new services.

This online INSPIRING ERA event on Wednesday 11 March at 10-12 CET offers a practical overview of knowledge valorisation using real examples and success stories from across Europe. It highlights different approaches to turning research into impact and introduces European-level tools, guidance and support structures designed to help researchers and institutions put knowledge valorisation into practice.

Participants will hear how others have approached knowledge valorisation, what has worked well in different contexts, and what EU-level support is available to help move from research to real-world impact.

Panel discussion: Perspectives on Knowledge Valorisation from across the ecosystem

In a context of economic transformation, global competition, and renewed policy focus on impact, Knowledge valorisation is increasingly at the heart of Europe’s research and innovation agenda.  The ability to translate knowledge into tangible societal and economic value has become critical.

This panel will bring together research and innovation stakeholders to illustrate the shift from traditional technology transfer towards a broader, more systemic and strategically focussed approach to knowledge valorisation – one that also highlights traditional tangible assets alongside less visible forms of knowledge. The discussion will explore how existing structures and incentives need to evolve, and how stakeholders can adapt to make knowledge valorisation a core, effective component of today’s R&I ecosystem.

We will discuss how knowledge valorisation takes shape in real research and innovation contexts, the role of support structures and intermediaries and what may be needed to help build a functioning KV ecosystem.

  • Moderator: Elisabeth Hajicek, Programme Manager at the Austrian National Contact Point for Intellectual Assets and Knowledge Valorisation (NCP-IP)
  • Kathrin Metselaar, Impact Developer, Innovation eXchange Amsterdam (Netherlands) (IXA)
  • Philippe Vanrie, Head of European Affairs & Brussels representative University of Vaasa (Finland) and Chair of the European Commission’s Mutual Learning Exercise on Knowledge Valorisation
  • Panellist representing industry (details coming shortly)
