At a moment when researchers face growing pressure—from political influence and misinformation to surveillance and the disruptive rise of AI—the Conference on Freedom of Scientific Research (open plenary), co-organised with UNESCO, comes to show what it means to protect scientific freedom in Europe.

Join us on 10 December 2025 for a powerful, timely, and inspiring event dedicated to one of the foundations of modern society: the freedom to do science without fear, interference, or manipulation.

The programme takes you on a journey through the realities of today´s research environment:

  • Personal testimonies from scientists who have faced threats or undue pressure.
  • Fresh evidence on emerging trends affecting academic freedom worldwide.
  • In-depth exploration of how misinformation, surveillance, and AI are reshaping daily work in labs and universities.
  • Expert insights into new findings and ideas feeding into forthcoming EU legislation.
  • Practical exchanges on solutions already working across Europe—ready to inspire, adapt, and scale.

This conference forms part of a wider conversation aimed at strengthening Europe’s research landscape and ensuring that Europe remains a place where researchers can thrive, innovate, and build meaningful careers. This year´s programme will highlight:

✨ Protecting scientific freedom
✨ New initiatives that make research careers more attractive, sustainable, mobile, and rewarding
✨ Latest policy developments supporting stability and excellence across borders and sectors
✨ Opportunities to connect, network, and collaborate with leaders, policymakers, and research professionals
