Discover ResearchComp: A tool to explore and develop research skills

Do you need to test your research skills? The European Commission has recently launched a new self-assessment tool based on ResearchComp, the European Competence Framework for Researchers. The tool helps researchers explore their skills and identify areas for further development.

ResearchComp supports the assessment and growth of research competences across key areas, contributing to professional and career development. It is structured into seven competence areas, covering a total of 39 competences.

The Self-Assessment Tool is an online multiple-choice questionnaire organised around these seven areas. After completing each section, results highlight key strengths and potential areas for improvement. The tool helps clarify levels of proficiency across research competences, supports career planning, and assists in presenting competences effectively to employers and institutions.

Each competence area takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. Progress can be saved and continued later, with results remaining available for up to 10 days. For a complete overview, all seven areas are recommended. For each question, one or more response options can be selected. After finishing a section, the average score reflects the level of proficiency in that area. If multiple answers are chosen, the average of those scores is used in the final results.

Research competences can be explored within the following seven areas of ResearchComp:

  • Cognitive abilities
  • Doing research
  • Self-management
  • Working with others
  • Managing research
  • Managing research tools
  • Making an impact

A PDF report summarising responses, results, and a detailed overview of competences can be downloaded from the results page. The report includes information for all completed areas. All data are fully anonymised and may only be used in aggregated form for statistical purposes.

Testing oneself has never been easier!
